Scientific Curiosity Captured in Photos

Caleb Charland is a Maine-based photographer who combines a love of scientific experiments and photographs into wonderful and amazing photographs. If Isaac Newton or Benjamin Franklin were into photography, their photographs might look something like these:
“Wooden Box with Horseshoe Magnet”
“Atomic Model”
“Demonstration with Hair Dryer and Aluminum Foil”
“Candle in a Vortex of Water”
“Fifteen Hours”

do you trust the #Spell-Check function ?

To be frank, I kinda use it, but of course I know that not everything that gets highlighted is wrong ... but seems a lot of people can`t make a difference between some common used words, and use a "by the ear" adaptation, enjoy :)

25 Reasons Not to Trust Spell-Check When Job Hunting

You've probably pored (or is it poured?) over your resume and cover letter hundreds of times, fine-tuning them, updating them, making sure they're so perfect that even the most trained eye could find nary a mistake.
And you've heard it before, but it never hurts to hear it again: Don't. Misspell. Anything.
And even with all the electronic advances we're making in the spelling department (good-bye Oxford English Dictionary print version), these words can still slip by spell-check, making you look like a complete idiot.
It's called spell-check, not grammar-check, for a reason.
Note: If you don't already know the differences between your & you're; and their & they're & there; and its & it's; and two & to & too, for all that's good and holy, please look them up.
Check out our list and feel free to add your own:
1. Pubic vs. public: This is my favorite one.

2. Manger vs. manager: Let's hope you don't confuse your boss for where the baby Jesus used to chill out.

3. Diffuse vs. defuse: Diffuse means to spread, as in diffuses the light. Defuse means to make less harmful, as in "defuse a crisis," or to defuse a bomb, which is important if you're applying for a bomb squad job.

4. Stationery vs. stationary: You exercise on a stationary bike. You print out your resume and cover letter on high-quality stationery.

5. Desperate vs. disparate: "My desperate ideas have always been embraced by my manger." Oy, spell-check won't catch those. See ya.

6. Loose vs. lose: Don't be a grammar "looser."

7. Allot vs. a lot: And please never write "alot," though your spell-check may be able to find that one.

8. Accept vs. expect vs. except: All three of them sound alike, and the last two look a lot alike, so be careful.

9. Fro vs. for: A lot of people just fly by these small words.

10. Preventive vs. preventative: Look at this example from TalkTalk: Preventive medicine regards vitamin C as an effective preventative against colds.

11. Site vs. sight vs. cite: Did you forget to cite your sources and then lose sight of your goals at your next job site?

12. I could of vs. I could have: Eek, this is not Twitter, folks -- have always wins.

13. Infamous vs. famous: Did you just have lunch with your infamous client? Meaning the worst kind of client ever? Infamous means not good. You don't want to say in your cover letter that the "infamous Mother Teresa" was one of your idols.

14. Flesh out vs. flush out: You can flesh out a great plan, while you flush out the insects from your baby's formula.

15. Access vs. assess: Assess your resume by accessing this post.

16. Definitely vs. defiantly: So many people still try to spell "definitely" with an "a" and get "defiantly" instead. Head. Meet. Wall.

17. Then vs. than: Perfect your resume, then apply for the job. It's better than sending one full of mistakes.

18. Lead vs. led: Colonel Mustard may be in the dining room with a lead pipe, but hopefully you led your team in sales last year.

19. Insure vs. ensure: You insure your car. A mistake-free resume ensures a shot at an interview.

20. Form vs. from: Again, always check even the most common and smallest of words!

21. Lay vs. lie: You lay down your paper. Hopefully you won't be lying down with your potential boss in your bed to get this job. Try to remember that "lay" needs a direct object.

This one needs a little bit more explanation though. The past tense of "lie" is "lay." I know, who exactly invented the English language?? You lay down on your bed yesterday. As for the past tense of "lay"? You laid those papers on your coworker's desk a week ago. Make sense?

22. Less vs. fewer: Yes, there is a difference. Check out Grammar Girl's take. All those signs in the grocery store? They should say "10 Items or Fewer."

23. Principle vs. principal: "My strong principals make me a great candidate." Nice to know you're so well acquainted with school leaders on steroids.

24. Farther vs. further: Use "farther" only for physical distance, "further" for everything else. And please don't type in "father" by accident. Trust me, you'll go so much further in life.

25. Alter vs. altar: You altered the course of your company's future. Then you went home and sacrificed a pig on your altar for dinner. You badass woman, you.
"Any person who uses the words 'irregardless,' 'a-whole-nother,' or 'all-of-the-sudden' will be sent to a work camp."

6 #Underground #Search #Engines you should know about ...

Top 6 Underground Search Engines You Never Knew About

I love Google, Bing and Yahoo just as much as the next Internet user, but sometimes you really want to dig down into a particular subject.

#1 – The Best Torrent Search Engine

If you are a Torrent enthusiast, and you find yourself pouring through the hundreds of search engines that are available online for shared torrent files, then search no longer. Torrent Finder is one of the most impressive meta-search engines for Torrent files around. It methodically searches through over 170 torrent sites to identify the results that pertain to what you’re looking for.

#2 – Free Bargains and Deals

At MakeUseOf, you’ll find a lot of excellent resources for how to find awesome deals, such as coverage of the great bargain search engine FreshBargains. FreshBargains aggregates results from 15 top websites, which is excellent. However, another fantastic and barely known website to find freebies is called Prospector.

#3 – House Sales and Sales Foreclosures

Earlier, I wrote an article about the best websites to find foreclosed homes. Public government sources seemed to provide the most information without requiring a paid membership. However, somehow I missed AOL Foreclosures. This foreclosure search engine sifts through various sources of foreclosure listings from all across the country (U.S. only), and unlike the paid sites – it offers price, address, and as much information about the property as is available. AOL Foreclosures is one of the unsung heros of free foreclosure search engines.

#4 – Public Records Search Engines

Another very common sought-after search engine that isn’t always very easy to find are those that offer free public records information. Nine times out of ten, if you try to find such a search engine, you’ll end up with results from one of the major commercial companies trying to sell paid public records search results to you. However, the Public Record Center is different.

#5 -  A Legal Search Engine

Ever hear of a search engine that lets you dig up legal information from the web? Neither did I, until I discovered Cornell’s Legal Information Institute. This amazing little search engine digs through the Institutes extensive legal library and pulls out any information that you might need. This could include family law, criminal law, labor law and much more.

#6 Paranormal Search Engine

Of course, if we want to go really underground, we’ve got to go paranormal. And there’s really no better underground paranormal search engine out there than UFO Seek. Don’t let the name fool you, this particular niche search engine isn’t just focused on UFOs and aliens.

just a #dream ...

#Amplify made me discover #soulblogging ...

Well after reading a post last night, some interesting ideas came to my mind, and it's more a question than an actual thought...

'Why do people blog ?' , and I think there are 2 main reasons, pro blogging and let's call it soul blogging.

Well, since I am quite new to this scene and most of you guys are social media pros and are in this landscape for some time, you know what pro blogging is, blogging for revenue , profit. In the case of pro bloggers I think there are also 2 categories, the real bloggers, people who actually write great articles do some inspiring work, giving internet a whole new meaning and giving social media a good name. On the other hand, there are the #wannabe pro bloggers, I mean the people that just want to make profit, and just search and create content only for the trends, they usually don`t really care, they don`t approve or care about the things they write, they just write in order to get traffic, abusing ad sense and a lot of other ad campaigns, which I think gives social media and blogging a bad name, now for real, how many times did you end up on a blog that had as many ads that you could not tell where is the actual content ?

On the other hand there are #soulbloggers, the people who created a blog to share their ideas, thoughts, and content found on the internet... And I think that these people deserve the credit, I mean, as I said earlier, I`m new to blogging, and I`m not even sure that I can call what I am doing #blogging, but I tend to think so ... Back to my point, I started blogging because of #amplify, thanks to the #firefox #extension of #clipmarks, which I discovered first, and after amplify, I started using amplify for the bookmarklet, which I found very interesting, because it was a simple way to share content with my friends that did not include a lot of copy paste and formating, I admit in the beginning the max length of the text was annoying, but later that changed and amping got a lot easier, after some time, thanks to @svartling I started to integrate and discover the great things about this community...

I can say that amplify turned me from a regular internet guy in to a soul blogger, because now, when I see something interesting, first thought that comes to my mind is "I have to amp this", let me see what the people has to say about it... And every time I get a comment or recommend, or a new follower, I get this warm fuzzy feeling, a joyful state, I think this is what they call the "joy of sharing", and I think I owe this to @egoldstein for creating this service that is about the people in it and the connections (because in some cases this is more than "network") they develop... because I am sure that if I would have started with an other service, I would have given up already ...

And this was about me, and how I discovered the "blogger" in me, I would love to hear how you started, what made you do it and what drives you in to writing another post, sharing another clip ...

Also, if you have some tips, tricks, any kind of constructive criticism about my articles and what I am doing, please feel free to #share them, because, as I mentioned earlier I am just at the begging of discovering what blogging and online communitys driven by shared interests are about ...

Disclaimer: Sorry for any miss spelling or other types of mistakes but I`m only at half of my cup of coffee and still sleepy, but I had to write this now, didn`t feel like I could delay it... so now I`m hoping for some feedback ...

The #lemming routine...

Wrote this while thinking about the "lemmings" game... :P
Yep, just another usual mornin` drinking my coffee listening to some good music(hip-hop, quality approved) ready to go to work to my lovely lemming routine … after work, same old schedule, go to school, get back home, watch some tvepisodes and go to sleep …
Now for real is this the big thing in our high tech community nowadays ? Although I use social media through out the day from my phone/ work pc/ home pc and any other way I can find to get on the internet, check my twitter, mail, messenger, amplify or google reader, I this the way to the american dream ? 5 work days a week some after work education (In my case a master degree) for a 2 day weekend(mainly used to get back in shape, get some sleep so I can start over on monday) and some 2 week of vacation time ? Really I don`t seem to understand this at all…
Okay, you say that social media is a great way to stay in touch and comunicate with other people, I agree, you read this from the other side of the planet(maybe, but u get the point) and this gives a nice confy`feeling, but, for real, this feeling has absolutly no chance next to the feeling that I get when I go into a bar with my friends and they tell me a funny story :D, I mean it gives a lot more joy than preassing a “Like” button or a retweet… Anyway, this is getting kinda late and I have to get going ( to get to work in time) …
Have a nice day :D

About friends and friendship...

Friendship love and truthImage via Wikipedia

I thought I should review and share some things on the importance of friends and friendship itself, a quite sensible topic, which a lot see in various ways.
To start width, here are some friendship quotes :

"A real friend is one who walks in when the rest of the world walks out."
- Anon

"Don't walk in front of me, I may not follow. Don't walk behind me, I may not lead. Walk beside me and be my friend.
- Albert Camus

"Everyone hears what you say. Friends listen to what you say. Best friends listen to what you don't say."
- Anon

"Many people will walk in and out of your life, but only true friends will leave footprints in your heart."
- Anon
And here are some traits that you will encounter in a true friend :

Concern:
A matter that engages a person's attention, interest, or care, or that affects a person's welfare or happiness. Caring about people and vice versa comes with looking out for their well-being. When I, personally, think of this, I think of friends offering advice I might not necessarily want to hear. In they end, friends will try to do what they can to end up with a positive resolution to anything happening in their friends lives.
Compassion:
A feeling of deep sympathy and sorrow for another who is stricken by misfortune, accompanied by a strong desire to alleviate the suffering. This could be running to Wal-Mart and picking up meds for a viral plague of a friend, forcing them to change out of a hideous outfit before they're seen in the public eye, and other endless opportunities to bring out a silver lining from a cruddy situation.
Honesty:
Truthfulness, sincerity, or frankness. You may have heard that this is the best policy, even if the truth hurts. It will sometimes test your strength and bravery at some point, but this isn't something you can just brush off; you have to face it. Whether it's an opinion on a significant other, their professional work, or which phone they should upgrade to, tell the truth. Tell the truth. Tell the truth. There are times where it might hurt, but it'll never be worse than being lied to.
Understanding:
A state of cooperative or mutually tolerant relations between people. The word "tolerant" in this definition made me laugh. In healthy relationships, the parties involved are able to be themselves from the most modest to the most looney of the crazies. I'm not sure how it is with your posse, but most of mine are very different from each other; this leaves room for teasing, laughing, and embracing the fact that we're all individually ourselves and not afraid to show it.
Support:
To sustain (a person, the mind, spirits, courage, etc.) under trial or affliction. We're all going to face new challenges, people, tastes... people are constantly evolving themselves as a person and we need secure relationships around us to keep going (whether or not we're conscious of this fact). I know for sure that if I didn't have support from friends and family when I changed my major a handful of semesters ago, I would probably have been hesitant and lacked the confidence that I do have. This is probably the most reciprocated of all the friendship ideals: watch their back and they'll watch yours. Encourage their endeavors and they'll watch yours. Motivate them and... well, you get the picture by now, I imagine.
Companionship :
One value of friendship which many find extremely important is the companionship aspect of it. Whether you are hanging out with your friends in between classes or going to the movies with them during the weekend, you will find that having friends is a really great thing. Friends are companions who will keep you occupied and individuals who you can have a great time with all the time.
Conversation : Even if you can't get together with your friends you can usually get a hold of them by phone, email or text messaging. Conversation, whether actual or virtual, is another value which people consider with regard to friendship. Everyone needs to talk and share their thoughts and feelings and friends are great in providing this for you. Good conversation usually equals a great friendship.

Helping Hand When Needed:

Friends also lend a helping hand when it is needed. Every once in a while you will find that you have a problem which your friends can often help you out with. Whether it deals with a fight with your parents or boy/girl issues, your friends are there for you. This is a valuable trait when it comes to friendship.

Laughter:

Those who have good friends will also find that laughter is a big part of the relationship. No one can make you laugh like your friends and laughter is so good for keeping your spirits up and making your day bright. You will find that the more good friends you have, the more laughter and happiness you will have in your life. Just keep in mind, though, that it is often quality of friends and not quantity of friends which make an individual happy overall.

Advice:

Another valuable aspect of friendship is that friends often provide helpful advice for one another. When teens have a problem they usually turn to their friends or their parents. Sometimes they may find that their parents are unable to help out in a certain situation and this is when they truly need the advice of their peers. Having friends means that you will have someone to help you get through a situation that you need help with. This, too, is a great aspect of friendship. The advice may range anywhere from what clothes to wear to what you should do in a certain circumstance. No matter what the issue may be, having a friend to provide advice is quite valuable.

Although this are not necessary found in a friend, but you need to find at least a few of them in each an every one of your friends...

And you need to keep in mind that, friends are one of the most important ingredient in the recipe of life.

#Productivity Tips

Well, if you ever thought of boosting your productivity, here are some myths that you should not take into consideration ...
Amplify’d from www.dumblittleman.com

5 Productivity Myths That Need to Be Busted

When there is so much advice and information on productivity floating around, it is obvious that not all of that is worth paying heed to. There are certain popular beliefs on productivity that some consider useful, which in reality do nothing but to hamper their efficiency.

This article talks about five productivity myths which the sooner you come to know about and understand, the better. I'm sure most these tips are something you could actually relate to. Check them out.
Multitasking Works
Let me set the record straight before I begin - I am not against multitasking. Some people can actually juggle tasks and accomplish all of them efficiently. But the fact is there aren't many people who can do it, especially in this age of information overload. Uni-tasking is far more effective if you want to get things done without compromising on quality.

We've already published how mono-tasking is better than multi-tasking, and why this might be the age of uni-tasking. If you care about focusing, and focusing well, try your hand on one thing at a time.
Procrastination is "Always" Bad
Procrastination is a basic human trait. Most of us are lazy by birth. We want to delay tasks and enjoy life, till they can be delayed. There are many negative effects of procrastination, no doubt. But, it isn't always bad to procrastinate.
Sometimes, it's important to take a step back, relax and just ignore what you do every day. It helps you assess the importance of things you do, prioritize them, and also helps to de-stress yourself. So it's good to procrastinate once in a while in order to recharge yourself.
The More You Work, the Better
This might have been true in the industrial age, but not in this information age. Make no mistake, there's still no substitute for hard work; success doesn't come easy. But, it requires that you be productive and efficient. You need to decide what should be your focus and where you should channelize your energies.

Sometimes, just 5 or 6 hours of work each day can get you results. But that has to be 5 or 6 hours of actual "work" and nothing else. And, you have to be consistent with that too; you gotta do it every day without fail.
The Same Productivity System Works for Everyone
This is something I myself understood quite late. I would read productivity advice and then try my best to implement it. When I was unable to follow it, I couldn't understand where I was going wrong. Finally, after trying out various systems, I found out what's best for me.

Since no two people are same, the same productivity system might not work for them. One might prefer to work till late, the other might be an early riser. The bottom line is that you need to try different productivity systems to see which of them fits you well.
It's Always About the System
Finally, I think one of the biggest myths surrounding productivity is that one can always be productive by following certain steps, or by following a productive system. It's not always about the system. It's about you.

I've read about people who suffer from disorders like ADHD and hence can't focus. But since they don't know about it, they cannot figure out why none of the productivity systems works for them. I've also read about people who don't like what they do, but still try out everything to focus and get things done, just to fail each time.

The point is, if you just can't get things done, and this has been going on for a long time, then it's time to self-introspect and find out what this is all about.Read more at www.dumblittleman.com
